Job Description
SUMMARY Under the direct supervision of the Codes Manager, Codes Director inspects existing residential and commercial properties, buildings and dwelling units to determine compliance with city ordinance standards by performing the following duties. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.- Inspects dangerous / unsafe structures.
- Obtains permission from owners and tenants to enter dwellings.
- Inspects property for nuisances and violations such as weeds and inoperable vehicles.
- Inspects premises for overall cleanliness, adequate disposal of garbage and rubbish, and for signs of vermin infestation.
- Contacts owners/tenants by phone or in person and prepares forms and letters advising property owners and tenants of possible violations and time allowed for correcting deficiencies.
- Consults file of violation reports and revisits dwellings at periodic intervals to verify correction of violations by property owners and tenants.
- Explains requirements of housing standards ordinances to property owners, building contractors, and other interested parties.
- Issues citations to property owners for code violations.
- Appears in Court as required on behalf of the City.
- Follows all City safety policies and procedures.
- Performs additional duties and tasks as needed or directed.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and toxic or caustic chemicals.
