Job Description

The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in specimen collection and processing, supporting high-quality laboratory operations in a clinical environment. This position not only performs blood draws and other specimen collections, but also assists with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement to ensure accurate results and a smooth patient and laboratory experience.

Responsibilities

+ Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of accuracy and patient care.

+ Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.

+ Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.

+ Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is complete and accurate.

+ Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols.

+ Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.

+ Package specimens appropriately for transport, following procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transit.

+ Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes, accurately labeling each sample.

+ Follow detailed procedures and protocols for specimen handling and transport to preserve the quality and reliability of test results.

+ Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks related to equipment and work areas as needed.

+ Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems and documentation.

+ Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing and specimen requirements.

+ Assist with troubleshooting issues in specimen collection and processing, and make recommendations to improve workflow.

+ Participate in training activities and support the development of other team members as needed.

+ Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and compliance standards.

+ Attend annual department trainings and maintain current knowledge of procedures, regulations, and best practices.

+ Answer telephone calls and respond to inquiries, including reading laboratory results over the phone when appropriate and permitted.

+ Maintain a professional, courteous demeanor with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory colleagues at all times.

Essential Skills

+ Demonstrated proficiency in blood draws and venipuncture techniques, including the use of straight needles and butterfly needles.

+ Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.

+ Ability to collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to established procedures and test orders.

+ Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verifying patient and test information.

+ Ability to accurately follow and interpret physicians’ orders and laboratory protocols.

+ Knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and safety standards.

+ Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic data entry, documentation, and communication tasks.

+ High School Diploma or GED.

+ Approximately 2-4 years of overall experience in a clinical, laboratory, or related healthcare environment.

+ Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures to patients and to respond to telephone inquiries.

+ Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced setting while maintaining accuracy and quality.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

+ Experience recording maintenance data and performing decontamination procedures on laboratory equipment and work areas.

+ Comfort reading and communicating laboratory results over the phone in accordance with policies and procedures.

+ Ability to make workflow recommendations and contribute to process improvements within the laboratory.

+ Experience updating patient information and working with electronic or computerized labeling systems.

+ Strong customer service orientation and the ability to interact with patients in a clear, courteous, and compassionate manner.

+ Willingness to participate in ongoing training and annual departmental education sessions.

+ Organizational skills to manage multiple specimen types and test orders simultaneously while meeting time-sensitive deadlines.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Abilene, KS.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 – $20.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
