Job Description

Job Purpose and Objectives: The Death Scene Investigator serves as the coroner’s medical representative, responding promptly to death scenes and conducting thorough, independent investigations to help determine the cause and manner of death. The position examines and documents scenes, identifies decedents, interviews relevant individuals, gathers medical and investigative records, photographs evidence, and maintains proper chain of custody. The investigator prepares required reports, coordinates post-mortem examinations and referrals, and communicates sensitively and effectively with the Coroner, District Attorney’s Office, law enforcement, medical personnel, and families. Responsibilities also include training and supervising on-call assistant investigators, reviewing hospice deaths, preparing state reports, and supporting prosecutors with criminal-history research, trial preparation, warrant-related inquiries, and courtroom technology.
