Job Description
DescriptionJOB DUTIES:
- Identify patients and their personal information by reviewing their identity documents
- Assess patient needs, reviewing patient history and determining the reason(s) for the blood draw
- Select gauge needles and prepare veins or fingers for blood draw
- Extract blood from patients through venipuncture or fingersticks
- Prepare specimens for transportation, including labeling vials accurately and matching blood specimens to patients
- Supply diagnostic notes to physicians or other healthcare professionals, as necessary
- Clean, maintain, and calibrate lab equipment used in the collection and processing of blood specimens
- Order laboratory supplies, as needed
- Maintain confidentiality of all information according to HIPAA and company policy
The Phlebotomist assumes other responsibilities as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Analytical ability to apply criteria and evaluate information to make decisions
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; and excellent interpersonal skills in teaming with patients, medical staff, and the public
- Detail-oriented with proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Professional appearance and ease in developing rapport with others
- Proven experience as a phlebotomist
- Understanding of proper patient identification methods
- Knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements pertaining to drawing blood, handling specimen samples, and use of relevant medical equipment
- Experience using effective puncture techniques
- Superb dexterity and hand-eye coordination
- Computer skills including MS Office, Outlook, Meditech, preferred
- Ability to move, position self, consistently operate various types of equipment, able to detect/observe/identify details at close or distant range with or without accommodations as well as exerting 20 to 50 pounds occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- H.S. Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent work experience in field, required
- BLS, required
- Certification with the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians and/or the National Phlebotomy Association, preferred
