Overview

At PNNL, our core capabilities are divided among major departments that we refer to as Directorates within the Lab, focused on a specific area of scientific research or other function, with its own leadership team and dedicated budget.

Our Science & Technology directorates include National Security, Integrated Discovery Sciences, and Energy and Environment. In addition, we have an Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a Department of Energy, Office of Science user facility housed on the PNNL campus

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Graduate Fellowship Program (NGFP) is the premier channel for bringing top talent to tackle our nation’s critical security missions. NGFP fellows provide support to national and international programs across the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and support the successful coordination of tasks, reporting, and stakeholder engagement while participating in exclusive professional development opportunities. This multi-disciplinary program combines technical analysis, policy development, program oversight, stakeholder communication and resource management to protect U.S. national security priorities. The program is sponsored by NNSA and administered by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

Responsibilities

Fellows support a broad range of NNSA priorities, including stockpile management, nonproliferation, counterproliferation, information security, administrative and financial support, and more. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

+ Be matriculated/enrolled in a graduate degree/doctorate program at an accredited college or university at the time of application OR

+ Have completed a graduate/doctorate degree program at an accredited college or university no earlier than April 2, 2025

+ Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA in graduate/doctorate program (current or final cumulative)

+ Selected applicants must supply official transcripts demonstrating eligibility (minimum 3.0 GPA) no later than January 31, 2027

+ If enrolled in a dual bachelor/master program, you must provide verification of bachelor’s degree completion by May 20, 2027

+ Available to work full-time for the duration of the one-year fellowship (June 2027 – June 2028)

Preferred Qualifications:

+ Experience working in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.

+ Comfort interacting with high-level government officials.

+ Open mind to new experiences and the willingness to learn about varied cultures and perspectives.

+ Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal.

+ Strong ability to manage multiple priorities leveraging technical knowledge in national security missions, budgetary processes, and regulatory frameworks.

+ Capacity to build relationships with various stakeholders at domestic and international levels.

+ Familiarity with U.S. government nonproliferation programs, DOE regulations, and global nuclear safety standards is preferred.

Additional Information

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

A security clearance background investigation includes review of your employment, education, financial, and criminal history, as well as interviews with you and your personal references, neighbors, and co-workers to determine trustworthiness, reliability, and loyalty to the United States. The investigation also examines your foreign connections, drug and alcohol use, foreign influence, and overall conduct.

Requirements:

+ U.S. Citizenship

+ Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

+ Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the applicant selected for hire is subject to pre-employment drug testing, and post-employment random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy if non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months cannot be demonstrated.

Testing Designated Position

This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
