Purpose Statement
The job of Para Educator - ACSS is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program within the assigned classroom with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in the regular classroom or in a self-contained classroom; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior during non-classroom time; providing information to appropriate school personnel; and attending IEP meetings.
This job reports to the Teacher/ Building Administrator.
Essential Functions
- Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
- Administer tests, homework, make-up work, etc., to support teachers in the classroom.
- Administer immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g., diapering, tube feeding, colostomy bags, medication, etc.) for meeting immediate health care needs.
- Assist students on and off buses and may accompany students on field trips, on buses, during recess and lunch periods, and on community excursions to facilitate learning experiences.
- Assist students in and out of wheelchairs for facilitating positioning, diaper changing, and/or toileting.
- Assist medically fragile or physically disabled students in maintaining their personal hygiene.
- Attend meetings and in-service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, etc.) for acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
- Communicate with supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, and parents to assist in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.
- Implement under the supervision of the assigned teacher, behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions for presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.
- Maintain instructional materials and/or manuals and electronic files/records to ensure the availability of items, provide written reference, and/or meet mandated requirements.
- Monitor students during assigned periods across a variety of school environments (e.g., restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, field trips, cafeteria, parking lots) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
- Provide instruction to students through a variety of individual and group activities under the supervision of the assigned teacher (e.g., academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills) to reinforce instructional objectives, implement IEP plans, and ensure students' success in school.
Other Functions
- Performs other related duties as assigned (e.g., accompanying students, charting student progress, etc.) to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Responsibilities include working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget. Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 30% sitting, 25% walking, and 45% standing. The job is performed under conditions that involve exposure to the risk of injury and/or illness, and in a clean atmosphere.
