Job Description
TOOL CRIB ATTENDANT DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The tool crib serves as the centralized hub for managing, storing, issuing, and maintaining all tooling and related equipment necessary for machining operations. It plays a critical role in ensuring production efficiency, quality control, and regulatory compliance by supplying the right tools, in the right condition, at the right time.
The tool crib supports production by maintaining accurate inventories of cutting tools, holders and fixtures. It is responsible for assembling complete tool setups according to engineering specifications and setup sheets, helping reduce machine downtime and setup errors.
Additionally, the tool crib ensures that all tools meet industry standards through proper calibration tracking, documentation, and preventive maintenance. By maintaining traceability and standardizing tooling processes, the tool crib contributes directly to product quality, operational efficiency, and safety.

CNC Tool Assembly Setup
- Assemble CNC tool holders, inserts, collets, and extensions according to setup sheets and engineering drawings.
- Ensure correct tool geometries, stick-outs and other features are achieved for each CNC machine setup.
- Maintain setup sheets, torque specifications, and technical drawings for tool assemblies.
- Balance rotating tool assemblies where required to reduce vibration to produce quality parts.
- Use presetting equipment or manual measuring devices to set tool lengths and diameters accurately.
- Maintain a clean and organized tool assembly station, ensuring safety and preventing damage to cutting tools.
- Deliver tools to work centers as new jobs are being set up.
- Inspect tools for damage and wear and replace broken tools and deliver to designated back-up tool staging areas.
Inventory Control
- Maintain an organized and up-to-date tool inventory.
- Monitor stock levels and reorder tools, parts, and consumables as needed to prevent shortages.
Daily Duties
- Build tools for upcoming jobs per engineering and set up documentation (includes balancing and presetting) and deliver to appropriate machine center.
- Maintain a clean and organized set up space, clean as you go. Return unused/new tools to proper inventory location. Disassemble tool assemblies when jobs are completed. Put away collets, extensions and other hardware. Use wax dip pot to coat lightly used tools that can be used for future set-ups.
- Perform audits of high usage tools to verify stock status, order tools as needed to support uninterrupted production.
- Prepare used and dulled cutters for regrind. Inspect dulled and chipped cutting tools. Tools that can be reconditioned and reground must be put back into original or equivalent packaging to be sent to appropriate reconditioning facility.
