+ Work in-person and online with undergraduate and graduate students from the Edwards campus and students from all KU campuses.
+ Writing Consultant: Foster student learning by asking questions, collaborating with writers during consultations, and teaching important writing strategies and concepts. Provide technology, research, reading, and writing support to students working on multimodal projects, including communication, technical writing projects and competency-based assessments.
+ Academic Coach: Provide virtual and in-person coaching appointments to support Edwards Campus undergraduate and graduate students in academic soft skills such as time management, study skills, and navigating academia. Hold study accountability appointments.

+ Participate in ongoing tutor education and development. Tutor professional development means achieving Level 1 certification through KU’s partnership with CRLA within 12 months, which involves asynchronous and synchronous training provided by employees of Wingspan. Achieving Level 2 after that is optional but highly encouraged. Occasional observation of appointments by Wingspan professionals and others will also provide helpful feedback for further professional development.

+ Participate in ongoing partnerships with a variety of classes/departments across campus and deliver occasional academic support events. Partnerships may require facilitating writing groups or academic information events, delivering presentations, participating in events, workshops or other forms of support as determined by the instructor and Wingspan staff. Academic support events may include writing or accountability workshops.

+ Maintain an organized, orderly, and safe learning environment. Participate in creating and maintaining a positive team environment.

Work Schedule:
Part Time
Up to 15 hours per week, but usually closer to 12 hours per week (per schedule below)
M: 5-9pm
Tues: 5-9pm
Thursday: 5-9pm
Maximum of 15 hours per week in the evenings Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays. Schedule will be set according to tutor availability and the scheduling needs of students. May be assigned virtual weekend hours depending on availability. Tutoring takes place starting the second week of each semester and runs through the end of finals week. Tutoring is not provided between terms. Summer tutoring needs vary and hours are greatly reduced

Required Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree
2. Excellent written communication skills, as evidenced in application materials
3. As demonstrated in application materials, a commitment to the improvement of one’s own writing and professional development as a writing consultant.
4. Meets KBOR-mandated English proficiency requirements, if applicable.
5. Trained or willing to be trained as an academic coach.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. MA in English, Composition and Rhetoric, Writing, TESOL, or Linguistics
2. Completion of graduate coursework in your field, as evidenced by writing sample
3. Previous experience in education such as prior work as a Writing Consultant/tutor, Graduate Teaching Assistant, Undergraduate Teaching Assistant, or other related experience, as evidenced by application materials
4. A demonstrated interest in helping fellow writers reach their academic goals with strong listening skills, sensitivity, generosity, and flexibility, as evidenced by application materials
5. Recent experience using the Microsoft 365 Suite, desktop publishing software, and a variety of online tools (e.g., Canva, Prezi, Zotero, WordPress, and other writing-related software) related to multimodal project design and construction, as evidenced by application materials
Position Overview:
KU’s Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support is partnering with KU Edwards Campus to provide writing support and academic coaching to in-person and online students. Wingspan offers a portfolio of collaborative, innovative academic support programs and services to students, faculty, and staff. Wingspan provides individual and group support through its Peer Academic Coaching program, Supplemental Instruction (SI) program, Learning and Tutoring Services, and Writing Center Services. The University of Kansas Edwards Campus is located in Overland Park, KS, strategically placed to bring permanent growth and education to the greater Kansas City area by providing courses to working professionals, transfer students, and international students. While classes can be held at any time during the day, most classes are held in the evenings between 4pm and 9pm
The Writing Consultant/Academic Coach will deliver one-on-one writing and academic coaching support to undergraduate and graduate students at KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park, KS. Tutoring will take place both in person and by appointment on Edwards Campus) and virtually via Zoom. Zoom appointments will be offered to any KU student in need of support. To meet student needs, tutoring hours will mostly take place in the evenings Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays, depending on tutor’s availability. Virtual appointments on the weekends may be a future request depending on tutor’s availability. The Writing Consultant/Academic Coach may also help lead drop-in writing groups or other academic events, where KU students can come together in-person and virtually to complete individual writing projects.
