Job Description
JOB SUMMARY:
This is skilled work in the operation of a wide variety of equipment used in the daily operation of a Transfer Station. Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient loading and compacting of solid waste into transport trailers, pushing of construction and demolition materials and weighing/processing vehicles coming in and out of the Transfer Station facility.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Operate single and double axle trucks, tractor-trailers;
- Operate backhoe, track loader, tandem axle dump truck;
- Operate heavy equipment, such as backhoes, bulldozer, front-end loader, and compactor to transport solid waste materials and to spread and compact layers of waste and earth cover;
- Direct incoming vehicles to proper dumping area;
- Examine cargo to prohibit disposal of caustic waste and other non-permitted material according to government regulations;
- Spray poisons and other specified chemicals over waste material to control disease carrying pests;
- Services, maintains and makes mechanical adjustments and minor repairs on equipment such as checking and servicing fuel, oil and coolant levels, lubrication, tire pressure and changes, general appearance;
- Cleans equipment on a regular basis;
- Operates mower and weed eater for grounds maintenance;
- Maintains records on operation of work accomplished and equipment operated;
- Assists the general public ta the scale house;
- Identifies various types of waste, vehicles and drivers associated with charge accounts;
- Weighs in vehicles as they arrive and sends them to the appropriate area to unload;
- Collects and records dumping fees from customers, cash, checks and credit cards;
- Answers the phone and radio;
- Assists in the recycle building sorting, unloading trucks, baling materials;
- Other duties as required by Solid Waste Superintendent and or Public Works Director.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: Performs other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE:
- Safety standards and practices;

- Traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in equipment operation;
- Procedures and policies of the Solid Waste Division;
- Laws, rules, regulations, codes and statues regarding the duties and responsibilities of the assigned department.
SKILLS:
- Skill in operation of a wide variety of equipment used in the daily operation of a Landfill and Transfer Station;
- Skill in the operation of all equipment at Transfer Station, including scale house operations.
ABILITY:
- Ability to operate track loader, backhoe, and compactor in a safe manner unsupervised;
- Ability to operate lawn mower and weed eater for long periods of time;
- Ability to make minor mechanical repairs on equipment;
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions;
- Ability to operate a typewriter, calculator, computer, and other general office equipment;
- Ability to determine what is allowable to be buried in the construction & debris area;
- Ability to learn and apply knowledge of accounting procedures and practices to routine clerical transactions;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective and efficient working relationships with other employees, officials and the public;
- Ability to understand and follow oral instructions and written diagrams;
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays;
- Ability to meet physical demands worksheet requirements.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Possesses valid Commercial Driver’s License or the ability to acquire within 6-months of employment;
- Must be current on vaccinations or be willing to obtain vaccinations to prevent hepatitis, tetanus, lime disease, etc. as deemed appropriate for employee protection.
REQUIRED EDUCATION/OR EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or G.E.D.;
- Or one to two years related experience and/or training;
- Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
PREFERRED EDUCATION/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Associate's degree or equivalent in Heavy Equipment Operation, Construction Science or related fiend from two year-college or technical school;
- or two to three years related experience and/or training;
- or equivalent combination of education and experience.
