Description

This position is responsible for the electrical substation maintenance on 115KV to 2.4KV switchgears and transformers.

Examples of Duties

+ Maintains all high voltage substations.

+ Create and execute switching orders as needed.

+ Perform infrared inspection of equipment such as breakers and transformer connections.

+ Test and inspects high voltage switchgear, protective relays, battery systems and high voltage transformers.

+ Conducts oil samples on equipment and maintains sample records.

+ Monitor and maintain City SCADA system.

+ Perform weekly inspections as required per EPA.

+ Assist line crew as needed.

+ Scheduled for on-call rotation.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Skill in maintaining switchgear and transformers. Knowledge of standard practices, material, tools and equipment used in the electrical trade. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices and procedures. Ability to understand verbal and written instructions. Ability to communicate with city employees, officials, and the general public.

Education, Certification and Experience: High school diploma or GED. Three to five years of experience in electrical substation maintenance. Required to have journeyman lineman card. System mapping; computer skills; two-year technical degree and ability to obtain CDL preferred. Employer-paid CDL training and testing may be provided in accordance with a training reimbursement agreement between the City and the employee. Valid Kansas driver’s license required within 6 months of employment.

Supplemental Information

Environment: Duties require work to be performed in undesirable physical conditions in which extreme noise, erratic human behavior is frequently encountered; hazards of serious injury or death from fire, electrical shock, explosion, cave in, gas poisoning; and the need to physically control humans, requiring constant safety considerations in the performance of duties.

Physical Characteristics: Lifting a maximum of 100 lbs. and frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing 75-100 lbs.
