About This Role

The Associate General Counsel serves within Kansas State University's Office of General Counsel (OGC) and provides legal support across a broad spectrum of University operations. The OGC represents the University with regard to all legal matters and is comprised of 6 general practice higher education attorneys and 3 professional legal staff. This position will provide legal expertise and leadership on the University's transactional legal matters, including advising on contracting, data and information technology, real estate, construction, research, entrepreneurial endeavors, policy, and open records. The attorney will serve as OGC's primary liaison to the Divisions of Financial Services, Information Technology, and Facilities, among other major units and colleges, and will advise on regulatory compliance and other matters associated with the general practice of higher education law. The attorney works closely with University administrators, faculty, and staff to ensure compliance and mitigate risk. The role requires strong legal judgment, interpersonal skills, inter-office collaboration, and a commitment to supporting the mission of higher education and Kansas State University.

Worksite Description

This position is On-site.

All employees must reside in the United States when they begin working to comply with state law. K-State is unable to provide remote or hybrid work opportunities for residents of the state of Idaho.
What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Juris doctorate degree from an ABA accredited school. The degree requirement ensures candidates possess the advanced legal knowledge, strategic leadership capabilities, and policy coordination skills essential for managing legal operations, advising senior leadership, and guiding institutional policy across complex regulatory environments. These competencies are typically developed and rigorously validated only through the comprehensive curriculum and intensive experiential experience inherent in a Juris Doctor program from an ABA-accredited law school-a prerequisite for licensure to practice law.
  • Six years of relevant experience
  • Must be licensed to practice law in the state of Kansas or admitted to membership within 12 months of hire

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 4 or more years of licensed legal practice
  • Strong interest in higher education legal practice
  • Significant experience in providing sophisticated legal advice on matters including contracting, complex transactions, and/or real estate and construction
  • Experience in providing counsel on transactions and legal policy involving data security, information technology, and privacy laws
  • Experience advising higher education institutions and/or government agencies
  • Excellent legal research, writing, presentation, and project management skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience maintaining client relationships
  • Ability to work in-office at K-State's Manhattan campus
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across departments and manage multiple priorities
  • Commitment to handling confidential and sensitive information with discretion
