Job Summary

The Canadian Sales Tax Analyst is primarily responsible for ensuring compliance with federal and provincial sales tax regulations, including GST/HST, PST, and QST. Their role involves a mix of compliance, research, and advisory functions for Morton Salt and some of its affiliates. In addition, the Canadian Sales Tax Analyst will have responsibility for unclaimed property compliance.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Compliance and Filing: Reconcile sales tax accounts and input tax credits, prepare working papers, and assist with month-end/year-end close and financial statement disclosures. 
  • Research & Analysis: Conduct technical sales tax research to interpret evolving federal and provincial guidance, analyze multi-jurisdiction issues, and document tax positions and internal policies.
  • Audit Management & Defense: Assist with and manage sales tax audits and inquiries from tax authorities like the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and Revenu Québec, gathering documentation and defending tax positions to minimize assessments.
  • Advisory & Planning: Provide internal business units with advice on sales tax implications for transactions, system configurations (e.g., ERP, tax software), and process decisions, identifying opportunities for tax savings and efficiency.
  • Process Improvement: Gain an understanding of current IT systems and business processes to design options and develop sound procedures for accurately capturing and tracking sales taxes efficiently.
  • Claim Processing: Review claim requests, verify documentation, validate ownership, and process claims.
  • Compliance & Reporting: Prepare and submit unclaimed property reports and payments to state entities, ensuring adherence to diverse state and federal regulations.
  • Communication: Correspond with claimants, holders (businesses/financial institutions), legal teams, and regulatory agencies.
  • Data Management: Maintain accurate records, update databases, and support internal finance/accounting processes, including reconciliations.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with state unclaimed property laws and requirements a plus.
