Job Description
The Behavior Specialist uses data-driven and culturally responsive
practices to assess student behavior, conduct Functional Behavior
Assessments, and develop, implement, and monitor evidence-based
Behavior Intervention Plans aligned with IEP goals. They collaborate
closely with classroom teams, administrators, and families to coach
effective behavior supports, provide consultation during IEP and
problem-solving meetings, and align interventions with schoolwide
initiatives such as PBIS, trauma-informed, and neurodiversity-affirming
practices. The role also includes designing and delivering professional
development, supporting crisis prevention and response, and leading
transition and placement-related planning to ensure continuity of
supports and positive student outcomes.
Qualifications
● Master’s degree in Special Education, Psychology, Applied Behavior
Analysis, Social Work, or related field (preferred).
● Experience working with students with significant behavioral and
emotional needs in a specialized setting.
● Demonstrated skill in conducting FBAs, developing BIPs, and
analyzing behavioral data.
● Strong collaboration, communication, and coaching skills.
● Knowledge of trauma-informed, restorative, and positive behavior
support frameworks.
Essential Duties ● Collect, analyze, and interpret behavioral data to identify patterns
and trends impacting student performance, guide intervention
planning, monitor progress, evaluate the effectiveness of supports,
and collaborate with staff to build capacity in data-based
decision-making for behavior support.
● Conduct comprehensive Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs)
using multiple sources of information.
● Develop and monitor Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) that are
evidence-based, proactive, and aligned with students’ individual
needs.
● Ensure interventions are culturally responsive and consistent with
students’ IEP goals.
● Partner with classroom teams, administrators, and support staff to
model and coach effective behavior support strategies, provide
consultation during IEP meetings and student support discussions,
and align behavioral supports with schoolwide systems and
initiatives such as PBIS and trauma-informed practices.
● Support teams in implementing safe, consistent crisis prevention
and response protocols.
● Design and deliver ongoing training (workshops, side-by-side
modeling, and feedback cycles) on classroom management,
trauma-responsive and neurodiversity-affirming practices, and crisis
prevention/de-escalation.
● Provide timely consultation to teachers, paras, and related service
providers; model strategies in real time and follow up with
actionable feedback and resources.
● Lead transition planning for students returning to their
neighborhood schools: co-create reintegration plans, coach
receiving staff, define success indicators, and monitor data during
fade-out of intensive supports.
● Facilitate collaborative problem-solving with home-campus teams
considering Day School placement; review data, design intensified
in-place supports, and outline criteria/timelines for next steps.
