Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
Faculty, Fellows, and Residents from the University of Kansas School of Medicine--Wichita’s Gastroenterology Department provide patient care through our clinic. We are dedicated to continuous quality improvement while providing high quality, efficient health care to patients. As a working manager for the Gastroenterology Clinic, you will perform daily patient-centered tasks within scope of practice and manage day-to-day operations of the GI clinic and clinical staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Primary Functions:
- Responds to calls and messages from patients, triaging and prioritizing requests for clinical advice, care plans, prescription refills, test results, prior authorizations, forms completion, and coordinating care with providers and other nursing team members
- Refills medications as authorized per protocol and as ordered by the provider(s)and obtains insurance authorizations (prior auths) as needed
- Assists providers during exams and in-office procedures as designated
- Collaborates with GI Fellow team and GI providers to schedule hospital follow up visits and procedures
- Enters and coordinates provider orders for medications, lab, imaging, DME, etc., monitors outstanding orders and follows-up to verify if completed and/or obtain results
- Performs care-related tasks such as administration of immunizations and injections, phlebotomy, suture/staple removal, EKGs, wound care, x-rays (if certified), and assisting with in-office procedures
- Administers and records screening tests in development, hearing, and vision as ordered
- Reviews and prepares charts for upcoming appointments including retrieval of pending test results, consult reports, external documents, and identifying preventive services that are due
- Provides cross coverage on the floor as needed
- Provides patient education to patients and/or their caregivers
- Assists with clean up in the team room at end of day; secures PHI, locks all necessary cabinets; checks refrigerator temperatures; counts narcotics/controlled substances (if applicable) and applicable recordkeeping
- Participates in clinic process improvement activities and team meetings to ensure efficient operations
- Reliable attendance and punctuality
- Performing other duties as assigned
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Certificates & Licenses:
- Kansas licensed RN or LPN
- IV certification is a plus
Education: Associate’s degree (two-year college or technical school)
Experience:
- Minimum two (2) years nursing experience required
- EHR experience preferred (we use eClinicalWorks)
- Microsoft Office experience a plus
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge
- Knowledge of nursing principles, practices, and procedures (includes vitals, immunizations, medications, in-office lab testing and procedures, and sterilization methods)
- Knowledge of federal, state and payer regulations and requirements related to nursing services including patient safety, infection control (Universal Precautions), emergency operations, and patient confidentiality
- Knowledge of medical terminology and medical documentation principles
- Knowledge of clinical assessment, treatment and management protocols
- Knowledge of medical ordering and referral procedures
- Knowledge of medical terminology and medical documentation principles
- Knowledge of HIPAA guidelines and procedures
Skills:
- Skill in building effective working relationships and developing teams
- Skill in utilizing electronic health records to assess patients, gather data, analyze results, develop care plans, and make recommendations to providers

Abilities:
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of a multi-disciplinary team
- Ability to communicate effectively patients, coworkers, residents, physicians, and external partners utilizing telephone and HIPAA-compliant methods
- Ability to collaborate with leadership to improve clinical care and operations and coordinate clinical activities with other teams
- Ability to handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- Ability to problem solve and make decisions related to duties
- Ability to engage staff and lead with professionalism, candidness, and respect
- Ability to handle upset patients and diffuse situations and manage the relationship with patient
- Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (closed toe shoes, masks when indicated)
- Ability to be prompt and present during scheduled work hours
