Job Description Summary:
The School of Nursing at the University of Kansas Medical Center seeks part-time nursing educators to join our progressive and innovative faculty, staff, and students. Adjunct Clinical Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating students in the clinical or classroom environment. This position reports to the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs and Department Chair. The position of Adjunct Instructor is considered a temporary position for the term of the contract.
Job Description:
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
- Provide timely, well-constructed feedback for practicum assignments.
- Coordinate regular meetings with students and preceptors.
- Collaborate with department faculty to ensure alignment with program objectives.
- Foster critical thinking, analytical skills, communication, and problem-solving abilities among students.
- Collaborate with nursing faculty to prepare for practicum instruction.
- Create a learning environment conducive to effective learning within resource limits.
- Enforce appropriate policies and expectations for students in compliance with KUMC policies.
- Utilize technology tools effectively, including learning management systems, e-mail, and office software.
- Evaluate student progress using established methods.
- Maintain accurate records as required by administrative guidelines and legal standards.
- Attend all required orientations and synchronous simulation events, such as standardized patient simulations.
- Work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and varying educational levels.

Work Environment
The work setting for graduate clinical adjunct instructors is primarily online with regularly scheduled site visits that may be in-person or virtual. On-site visits are conducted at a variety of clinical settings that can include ambulatory care, specialty clinics, acute care hospitals, and long-term care. Clinical faculty may also be in clinical simulation laboratories for standardized patient and interprofessional simulation activities.
Required Qualifications
Education:
- Doctoral degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the State of Kansas or a multi-state RN license issued by another Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state.
- Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license issued by the State of Kansas Advanced Practice Specialty Certification, if teaching advanced practice clinical practicums.
This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have the foundational knowledge and skill set required to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is based on accreditation requirements, institutional standards of academic and professional excellence, alignment with peer institution benchmarks, and contributes to the credibility and effectiveness of the role within the university community.
Work Experience:
- At least 1 year of relevant patient care experience
- Strong patient care and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Work Experience:
- Experience teaching in a nursing program, with a least one course taught.
- A minimum of 2 years of relevant patient experience.
- Demonstrated excellence in precepting and/or mentoring nurses.
