Job Description

Firefighter I/MICT (Paramedic)  

Basic Function

Under supervision, responds to fire alarms and emergency medical calls to protect life and property.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Tests and maintains ambulances, pumping engines, aerial ladder trucks, hoses, and other equipment
  • Participates in fire prevention, station maintenance, and training activities
  • Performs cleanup and overhaul work after a fire
  • Rescues persons at the scene of a fire
  • Responds to EMS calls, administers first aid as required, and writes EMS reports
  • Responds to major alarms while off duty
  • Assists with public education on fire prevention
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications 

  • Ability to meet standards established by superiors
  • Ability to learn technical firefighting and EMS techniques
  • Some mechanical knowledge and the ability to learn to operate and maintain fire equipment and ambulances
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with fellow employees and the public
  • Ability to keep simple records and prepare reports
  • Ability to respond to and put out fires

Education and Experience

  • Completion of high school or GED required

Special Requirements

  • A current Kansas driver’s license
  • A Class B driver’s license
  • National Incident Management and Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operation certification
  • Fire Fighter I and Kansas Paramedic Certification
  • Must be available to work nights, overtime, in shifts, and weekends

Physical Requirements

  • Intense physical effort is required.  Individual must be able to stand, walk, sit, lift, carry, push, pull, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, speak, and listen for extended periods of time.

Working Conditions

Work involves continuous exposure to hazardous substances, potentially dangerous situations, and unpleasant work conditions such as adverse weather conditions or extreme risk of accident or ill health.
