Distinguishing Features of Work
This position offers a unique opportunity to provide legal guidance on municipal contracts, procurement, and compliance, ensuring the City operates within the bounds of law while mitigating risks. You will collaborate closely with multiple departments, advising on complex contracts, negotiating terms, and resolving disputes in a fast-paced, dynamic legal environment. Work is subject to review of the Chief Deputy City Attorney or Director of Law and will work closely with a Deputy City Attorney and multiple departments on a variety of contracts to support strategic city initiatives and uphold the integrity of municipal operations.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Provide legal advice and guidance to the City Purchasing Manager on matters pertaining to City procurement
  • Drafting and reviewing contracts including leases, purchase agreements, and other legal documents
  • Negotiating contract terms with clients, vendors, and other parties
  • Providing legal advice on contract interpretation and obligations
  • Ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
  • Identifying and mitigating potential legal risks within contractual agreements
  • Collaborating with other departments to gather necessary information for contract development
  • Resolving any contract-related disputes or issues
  • Updating contractual policies and procedures as needed to align with current laws
  • Conducting legal research to support contract negotiations and development

Requirements of Work

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and procedures of civil law, especially as they relate to municipal corporations, and ability to apply this knowledge to legal issues.
  • Ability to analyze and draft risk-limiting contracts and legal instruments.
  • Expertise in contract law, especially as it pertains to technology and construction
  • Ability to perform self-directed research and analysis as required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other Departments, representatives of other organizations, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Familiarity with lien laws, indemnity clauses, and dispute resolution provisions
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state and municipal regulatory requirements
  • High attention to legal detail and document accuracy
  • Professional discretion and sound judgment
  • Ability to collaborate across legal and non-legal teams
  • Strong time management in high-stakes environments
  • Ability to attend off-site meetings as needed.
  • Admitted to practice law before the Supreme Court of the State of Kansas.
  • Ability to work in an office environment using current office technology and equipment.
