Job Description
Butler Community College is seeking a Deputy Chief for it’s Public Safety Office. The Deputy Chief/Assistant Director of Public Safety reports to and is supervised by the Chief of Police/Director of Public Safety. The Deputy Chief/Assistant Director is assigned to provide a walking and driving patrol of campus properties to: protect individuals, assets, and facilities; to provide assistance when needed; respond to and manage emergency situations; deter, detect and investigate criminal activity; enforce state laws, county resolutions, municipal ordinances, and college rules; and provide for the safety and security of the College, maintaining peace and order on the campus.
The Deputy Chief/Assistant Director assists the Chief /Director in the development, administration, coordination, and implementation of departmental and College policies, procedures, programs, and activities. The Deputy Chief/Assistant Director evaluates policies, procedures, programs, activities, rules, orders, and regulations to ensure compliance with the college and department’s mission, goals, objectives, core values, and general law.
The Deputy Chief/Assistant Director of Public Safety will serve as the acting Chief/Director in the absence of the Chief/Director.
A. Must meet people easily and display courtesies to them.
B. Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions.
C. Possess good communication skills.
D. Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
E. Knowledge of radio operation, cell phone, and public safety equipment.
F. Knowledge of some mechanical, electrical and plumbing.
G. Possess computer skills to send and receive e-mail and prepare documents.
H. Ability to learn and use institutional software systems.
I. The ability to respond to and manage emergency situations and resolve conflicts.
J. Knowledge of crime scene management and criminal investigations.
K. Must be a graduate of the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center or other KLETC approved training that meets the statutory requirements to be a Kansas Law Enforcement Officer. Must be currently certified as a law enforcement officer or be able to obtain certification within six (6) months by successfully challenging the reciprocity examination, receiving a waiver of certification, or completing the battery of requisite training prescribed by the KLETC and Kansas Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.
A. Prior experience as a Kansas certified law enforcement officer.
