Job Description Summary:
The Data Engineer - Wichita will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining data pipelines and databases to support clinical and population health research. Excellent communication skills and experience with requirements gathering are a must. This role requires strong technical skills and attention to detail.

Job Description:

Key Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, and maintain data pipelines and databases to support clinical and population health research
  • Transcode electronic health record (EHR) data (e.g., from eClinicalWorks) into common data models for use in research
  • Act as an honest broker to prepare deidentified or limited datasets in compliance with institutional and regulatory policies
  • Ensure data quality, security, and compliance with HIPAA, IRB, and institutional standards
  • Collaborate with researchers and clinicians to gather data requirements and deliver technical solutions
  • Develop and optimize analytic datasets for investigators and research teams
  • Document data workflows, processes, and schema to support transparency and reproducibility
  • Develop dashboards and data visualizations to support research and reporting needs
  • Contribute to the development of infrastructure to support new data sources and research partnerships
  • Participate in team meetings, training, and cross-campus collaboration to align with institutional research priorities

Required Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, informatics, or a related field. Education may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.


Work Experience:
  • 3 years of experience in data engineering, database management, or a related role, preferably in a healthcare or research setting.
  • 2 years' experience working with SQL and database management systems (e.g., MySQL, MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL).
  • 1 year experience with data integration tools and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes.
  • 1 year of experience working in a healthcare, clinical, or research data environment
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Python or R for data manipulation and analysis.


Preferred Qualifications

Education:
  • Master's degree in biomedical informatics, computer science, data science, or a related field. Education may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.


Work Experience:
  • 2 years of experience working with healthcare data standards and systems (e.g., Epic, eClinicalWorks, REDCap, OMOP).
  • 2 years of experience developing ETL processes in a cloud or distributed computing environment.
  • 1 year of experience serving as an honest broker or handling deidentified/limited datasets in compliance with HIPAA and IRB protocols.
  • 1 year of experience collaborating directly with clinical or academic research teams to gather data requirements and deliver technical solutions.
  • Familiarity with clinical data standards and healthcare databases (e.g., Epic, CIBMTR, REDCap, OMOP).

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
