Job Description: General Maintenance Worker

This role demands a diverse skill set, with the ability to handle routine and special assignments across a range of maintenance program areas in the Public Works, Water, Sewer, Street, and Animal Control departments. It's a position that requires demonstrated competency and increasing independence.

 

The City Administrator will supervise the General Maintenance Worker and benefit

from ongoing training on various equipment, operational rules, guidelines, procedures,

and methods. This support is designed to help the candidate grow in their role and develop their

skills.

 

Public Works:

  • Maintains city-owned parks/playgrounds, landscaping, and other green areas by operating a variety of motorized equipment and using many hand & power tools
  • Mows grass, trims, and rakes leaves & collects yard waste
  • Removes trees, prunes, and sprays assigned City trees/shrubs/bushes/and plants
  • Repairs or installs playground equipment
  • Repairs and replaces components of irrigation systems
  • Performs some carpentry work on fences, park buildings, and other city-owned property
  • Picks up trash,
  • Cleans & maintains bathrooms
  • Winterizes bathrooms as needed
  • Maintains all city-owned buildings, structures,
  • Regular maintenance of heating and air conditioning units
  • Performs minor electrical repairs
  • Repaints and necessary repair work for the City Pool ahead of the summer season

 

Water, Wastewater:

  • Maintains, operates, inspects, repairs, and installs water distribution system facilities, piping, storage tanks, meters, hydrants, valves, pressure-reducing stations, pumping stations, pumps, controls, measuring devices, communication systems, and related appurtenances.
  • Performs all KDHE required testing
  • Working with KDHE during system inspections
  • Maintains all KDHE required recordkeeping
  • Coordinating with the company that performs our annual water tower maintenance and inspection

 

Streets/Lagoons:

  • Maintains, operates, inspects, repairs, and installs lagoon system facilities, piping, storm drains, catch basins, sub-drains, meters, pumping stations, pumps, controls, measuring devices, communications systems, and related appurtenances.
  • Installs, removes, and replaces asphalt and concrete.
  • Installs traffic counting equipment, traffic and parking control signs, traffic markings, curbs, and paints crosswalks.
  • Operates small street paving and painting equipment.

  

Knowledge of standard and job-specific methods, materials, terminology, and safe work practices for maintenance, construction, chemicals, and maintenance equipment and tools.

 

Skill in: Physical stamina and strength to operate a variety of tools and equipment, perform physical tasks for long periods of time, and ability to lift light and heavy loads (20-90 lbs.); physical flexibility to move objects and operate equipment; demonstrate the ability to operate and drive vehicles and equipment safely.

 

Ability to: Listen, understand, retain, follow, and apply verbal and written instructions or directions; learn effective and safe operation of equipment and tools; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others; respond courteously to public inquiries; recognize and use safe work practices; learn and retain specific and general information concerning equipment, functions, and projects; be available for standby and emergency response coverage (before and after regular work hours; weekends, and holidays).
