Join our team at the City of Wichita Department of Law! We are currently seeking a skilled attorney to fill the role of Municipal Court Prosecutor (Attorney I). This position offers an exciting opportunity to engage in professional legal work, leveraging your expertise and trial skills in tasks such as interviewing witnesses, preparing trial dockets, trying misdemeanor bench trials and prosecuting criminal cases in Wichita Municipal Court. This position may also occasionally handle appeals of municipal court cases to District Court.

As a member of our dynamic prosecution team, you'll be responsible for the prosecution of a wide range of cases, including traffic violations, criminal charges, domestic violence cases, and environmental/housing offenses. Examples of Work Performed

  • Develops and prosecutes police and traffic cases
  • Interviews complainants and witnesses, determines facts relative to the prosecution of cases in court, and issues complaints
  • Confers with and advises Police Officers and other City officials as to legal interpretation of City ordinances
  • Represents the City in prosecuting building, health, and zoning ordinance violations.
  • Completion of work assignments may require the operation of a vehicle

Requirements of Work

  • Working knowledge of the principles of criminal law, particularly as they relate to the prosecution of municipal ordinance violators
  • Ability to appear in-person for municipal court proceedings according to criminal/traffic dockets as assigned.
  • Working knowledge of municipal laws and ordinances
  • Working knowledge of municipal court methods and procedures and skill in the prosecution of cases heard in court
  • Ability to apply legal principles to determinations on individual cases and problems.
  • Ability to perform self-directed research and analysis as required for effective prosecution
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of other organizations, and the public.
  • May require ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace
