Job Description

Position Summary:

The Medical Assistant assists the Clinical Care team with patient care tasks such as performing vital signs, point of care testing, phlebotomy, administering immunizations and injections and assessments, as directed by the Clinic Leadership and Providers. Medical Assistants are expected to work at any HPC Clinical Sites as needed.

HPC employs a team-based approach to care delivery for all patients. Clinical staff work with their team to effectively use huddles at the start of each clinic day, utilize standing orders when applicable, use evidence-based approaches to patient care such as teaching self-management to patients, emphasize seamless care coordination for all patients, strive to understand the vulnerable populations served, and adjust services to fit patient needs. Upon hire, all staff receives orientation regarding benefits of the HPC team-based approach to population health.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide care to patients as directed by the team leader/Clinic Director to include patient reason for visit, vital signs, weight, height, medication reconciliation, medical/surgical history, and other assessments, administer medications and immunizations.
  • Perform CLIA waived tests as appropriate, including quality control testing.
  • Schedule diagnostic tests for patients when ordered by a provider.
  • Assist provider with physical exams and procedures.
  • Contact labs for test results, communicate test results to patients via phone, eportal and mail following provider instructions and clinic protocols.
  • Review patient electronic charts for the following day and use Pre-Visit Planning to anticipate patient needs.
  • Assist with Prescription Assistance Program (PAP) medication management.
  • Assist with checking in and discharging patients, scheduling appointments, and answering phones.
  • Provide Medical Assistant duties to a range of patient populations including newborn, pediatric, adult and geriatric.
  • Observe the condition of patient and reports significant changes to appropriate persons.
  • Uses communication skills effectively to function as a member of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Participate in patient teaching according to the patient’s plan of care.
  • Document care provided and patient status in accordance with the clinic processes and standards of care through the Clinic’s Electronic Health Record and other reporting systems such as immunization and disease registries.
  • Assist in providing a safe environment and promotes quality patient care through adherence to established standards.
  • Identify and participate in performance improvement activities.
  • Demonstrate competent practice and engage in opportunities for clinical growth.
  • Follow proper precautions to provide a safe patient care environment including performing hand hygiene and patient identification prior to providing care.
  • Use standard precautions including personal protective equipment for anticipated contact with blood or other potentially infection materials.
  • Attend events as requested either on site or offsite, including working the events, set up and clean up.
  • Adhere to HPC attendance policy
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality is an essential function of this job.

Qualifications:

  • Possession of a valid CMA/CNA certification preferred.
  • Ability to relate well with patients and other health care personnel.
  • Social and cultural sensitivity appropriate to ethnically and economically diverse patient and employee base.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to travel to HPC clinic site locations

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED certificate or minimum two years work experience in a related field is required.
  • Graduation from a certified CMA/CNA program preferred.
  • One-year experience working as an MA/CNA preferred.
  • Bilingual preferred.

Typical Physical Demands:

  • Prolonged sitting or standing and walking may be required.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds; occasionally up to 60 pounds. Ability to push/pull 80 lbs.
  • Those physical movements and the degree of mobility, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination normally associated with normal medical office will be performed on a repetitive basis.
  • The ability to distinguish letters and symbols as well as the ability to utilize telephones, computer terminals and copiers is required.
  • Work under stressful conditions as well as irregular hours may be required.
  • Frequent exposure to communicable disease, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, radiation, and other conditions common to a clinical environment may routinely be encountered.
