Summary

The Deputy Sheriff is responsible for performing general law enforcement duties in the protection of life and property. Ensure the safety and security of county property and the county jail. The enforcement of all laws and ordinances, maintaining compliance with traffic violations and investigations, patrol of the county, investigation of crimes, and the serving of civil process. Works under general supervision

Responsibilities

  • All sheriff’s deputies are required to maintain 40 hours of continuing education to remain compliant with KCPOST. Weapons certifications must be maintained for primary and secondary handgun, pistol, shotgun, non-lethal shotgun, rifle, less-lethal tools certification. Maintain SFST (Standardized Field Sobriety Testing) recertification. Maintain taser certification.
  • Duties assignments may include but are not limited to any of the following.
  • Road Patrol
  • Serve of civil papers
  • Accident investigation
  • Traffic enforcement
  • Law enforcement: Enforce state statues and effect arrests when needed.
  • Response to medical emergencies.
  • Field training of new deputies.
  • Report writing, GPR/offense/arrest reports.
  • Making split second decisions, in which others are able to decipher after many hours of review.
  • Complete probable cause reports.
  • Collect and log evidence. Forward evidence for processing.
  • Inspect and maintain patrol unit.
  • Conduct follow up.
  • Check and maintain duty gear.
  • Extra patrol/code checks.
  • Assist other agencies as requested.
  • Public relations.
  • Assist in emergency operations.
  • Protect and serve the community.
  • Weapons maintenance.
  • Forward evidence for processing.
  • Perform VIN inspections.
  • Conduct extended surveillance.
  • Assist in storm siren testing.
  • Court Security:
  • Arrive at the courthouse, open the building.
  • Test and operate the security scanner and x-ray machine.
  • Arrest subjects that come into the courthouse with warrants.
  • Provide security for the courtroom.
  • Respond to emergencies in the courthouse and at the administration building.
  • Assist patrol as needed when staffing is low or for call coverage.
  • Serve civil papers if the courts aren’t busy.
  • Maintain medical supplies in the trauma kit.
  • Perform monthly check and maintenance of all AED’s in the courthouse and sheriff’s office.
  • Attend quarterly court security meeting with court staff.
  • Change batteries on all the panic buttons in the courthouse, administration building and community corrections.
  • Maintenance as needed on assigned patrol vehicle.
  • Investigations:
  • Review reports as assigned.
  • Review emails.
  • Answer phone calls from victims and assist citizens with general questions regarding investigations.
  • Type case reports on interviews, follow-ups, call outs, and search warrants.
  • Assist the patrol division with investigations and questions when needed.
  • Conduct follow up interviews, suspect interviews, and victim interviews.
  • Develop information on current criminals, and their habits to share with our agency/other agencies.
  • Build confidential sources, and informants, keeping in contact with them to ensure good information.
  • Develop background information on persons of interest/suspects for cases.
  • Special duties as assigned by command staff.
  • Attend daily briefings with all divisions of the sheriff’s office to share information.
  • Assist other agencies that request our help.
  • Notify the County Attorney’s office with regard to active investigations.
  • Conduct storm siren testing.
  • Prepare and execute search warrants and subpoenas.
  • Participate in monthly policy review.
  • Perform background checks on new applicants for the sheriff’s department.
  • Participate in quarterly neighborhood watch meetings.
  • Appear in court and attend jury trials as required.
  • Attend autopsies as required.
  • After hours call out to conduct investigations.
  • Call out investigations for fatality accidents.
  • Jail Transport:
  • Review court docket and prepare court transportation if needed.
  • Check with sergeant to see if there any transports that came in after hours.
  • Prepare court paperwork and deliver it to district court, county attorney and district judge as needed.
  • Escort inmates to the nurse as needed.
  • Serve warrants and civil papers to inmates housed in the jail.
  • Arrest court commits and people who turn themselves in on warrants.
  • Maintain transport vehicles and record vehicle mileage.
  • Check transport vehicle restraints to ensure they are working properly.
  • Perform fingerprinting, VIN inspections and take walk-in reports.
  • Take incident statements in the jail and when the public comes in to report a crime.
  • Install car seats for the public.
