Job Description
Job Description: Performs routine and special laboratory tests and contributes to the general laboratory functions. Performs specimen collection and processing duties according to policies established within the department. Recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action. Provides assistance to laboratory coworkers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the supervisor or pathologist. Calls critical test results to providers or nurses immediately and according to established criteria. Prepares test reports legibly. Initials and dates own work performed. Reviews reports for clerical accuracy and clinical indications. Performs preventive maintenance by following department preventive maintenance schedules. Documents all checks, preventive maintenance, routines, problems, and corrective actions taken. Provides assistance to laboratory coworkers in the resolution of problems. Seeks help from the Laboratory Supervisor as required. Participates in the instruction of laboratory bench procedures, instrument/clinical troubleshooting technique and clinical application of test results. Assures assimilation of procedures and helps evaluate troubleshooting techniques. Documents same by initialing department checklist. Reports unresolved instrument/clinical problems to the Laboratory Supervisor. Assists in inventory control and requisition of supplies as needed and/or requested. Performs quality-control tests. Runs quality-control tests according to procedure and maintains appropriate data recording. Analyzes quality-control data and takes appropriate corrective action when results are outside acceptable limits. Provides assistance to laboratory coworkers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the Laboratory manager as required. Documents actions taken. Holds patient results until out-of-control situations are resolved. Reports unresolved situations to the Laboratory Supervisor, or where appropriate, the Clinical Pathologist. Performs clerical functions associated. Additional duties and responsibilities: Assists in the department’s quality assurance activities. Maintains records of work performed for workload and statistical reporting purposes. May be assigned responsibility for monthly collection of data. Helps maintain files pertinent to the laboratory. Attends regular department meetings and in-service trainings. Attends and participates in the preparation and/or presentation of the laboratory continuing education programs. Writes new procedures and conducts in-service classes for other laboratory personnel under the guidance of the Laboratory Supervisor. Observes laboratory and facility policies, procedures, and safety practices. Keeps work area neat and clean, and restocks daily supplies. Maintains equilibrium in stressful situations.
