Job Description Summary:
A Research Assistant position is immediately available for highly motivated individual.

Applicant must have a Bachelor of Science in physiology or biology degree (or higher), and experience in animal handling and histology, and should be available for in-person interviews.

The Research Assistant position in Dr. Kristy Brown's lab will conduct research to study the mechanisms that regulate cancer development and metabolic health. The Research Assistant will work on a variety of research projects including but not limited to animal handling, mouse oral gavage, glucose tolerance tests, intraperitoneal and subcutaneous injections, indirect calorimetry, tumor monitoring and measurement using calipers, feeding, and colony management.

The research is housed in modern laboratory space with state-of-the-art equipment and will build on a long history of innovative service to the KUMC research community.

Job Description:

Perform general research experiments under the direction of the PI, including but not limited to:
  • Genotyping and mouse experiments.
  • Histology analysis.
  • Maintain mouse colony, animal breeding and genotyping.
  • Maintain the lab supply.
  • Participate in regular communication with the PIs via lab meetings and personal meetings.
  • Position also includes generation of data and its analysis for the preparation of published papers, as well as assistance on grant submissions and other documentation necessary for laboratory compliance.
  • Follow established quality control and quality assurance policies and procedures, including appropriate documentation.

Required Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor of Science in physiology or biology, or other science related field. Relevant experience may be substituted for the degree requirement on a year-by-year basis.

Work Experience:
  • Experience with animal handling, experimentation and colony management.
  • Experience with histology.


Preferred Qualifications

Education: Master of Science degree in physiology, biology or other science related field.

Work Experience:
  • Experience studying the mechanisms that regulate energy metabolism and/or tumor development and growth.
  • Experience in histology, mouse oral gavage, glucose tolerance tests, intraperitoneal and subcutaneous injections, indirect calorimetry, tumor monitoring and measurement using calipers, feeding, and colony management is preferred

Skills
  • Record keeping skills
  • Communications skills, including experience writing and orating with a scientific audience, as evidenced by application materials and interview.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
