Job Description

Job Overview The Track Laborer is responsible for performing general labor duties as part of a team focused on track projects, including construction, maintenance, inspections, and service. This position involves hands-on work to ensure the proper functioning and safety of railroad track systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Drive spikes into the track structure.
  • Move and set cross ties and lengths of steel rail.
  • Shovel and distribute stone ballast as needed.
  • Adjust and lubricate switches.
  • Tighten track bolts to maintain proper track integrity.
  • Check track gauge and cross level to ensure safety and compliance.
  • Carry track jacks (approximately 40 lbs.) for track adjustments.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but straightforward written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to handle typical issues related to track maintenance.

  • Regularly required to talk and hear.
  • Must be able to regularly lift and/or move heavy weights.
