Job Description Summary:
The Embedded Simulation Nurse (ESN) is essential team member in meeting our educational requirements in facilitating interprofessional education by engaging in simulation-based learning activities for healthcare professionals. This position contributes to creating immersive, realistic simulation experiences and promotes critical thinking, teamwork, and clinical reasoning among learners.

The ESN will serve as an active participant of the simulated scenario through activities that include but are not limited to: role-playing for a variety of clinical roles, communicating with the control room, assisting learners in maintaining clear direction of the simulation case progression, and aiding in troubleshooting and safe use of equipment.

This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, in-person position.

Job Duties Outlined:

Simulation Design and Development:
  • Collaborate with educators and simulation specialists to design and develop realistic simulation scenarios aligned with the medical school's curriculum.
  • Integrate clinical expertise and evidence-based practice to create immersive learning experiences for healthcare professionals.
  • Work closely with faculty, clinicians, and simulation team members to coordinate schedules, assess learning needs, and enhance simulation-based learning initiatives.
  • Actively participate in simulation-based professional development and contribute to continuous quality improvement efforts.
  • Collaborate in reviewing and developing case materials, including Wichita-specific simulation documentation.
  • Serve as a clinical subject matter resource for maintaining the quality and realism of simulation-based education.



Facilitation and Role Portrayal:
  • Facilitate simulation sessions for interprofessional groups, including medical students, nursing students, residents, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Portray various clinical roles (primarily a nurse) during simulation scenarios, interacting with learners and providing realism and clinical guidance.
  • Communicate actively with the control room team to manage scenario flow and troubleshoot in real-time.
  • Assist learners in navigating simulation objectives and maintaining clear direction throughout the simulation experience.



Clinical Skills Teaching:
  • Provide demonstrations and teaching of key clinical skills such as IV insertion, CPR (including chest compressions), airway management, and defibrillator use, as applicable to simulation cases.



Debriefing and Reflective Learning:
  • Guide and mentor participants during simulation activities, promoting clinical reasoning and teamwork.
  • Lead or assist in post-simulation debriefing sessions to facilitate reflective learning and reinforce best practices in patient care.



Simulation Operational Support and Equipment:
  • Operate simulation equipment and software, ensuring seamless execution of sessions.
  • Lead the preparation, breakdown, and cleanup of simulation sessions.
  • Support inventory and management of supplies and simulation equipment. Organize and monitor simulation supplies, ensure appropriate stock levels, and report supply needs or reorder requests to the Simulation Center Program Manager.
  • Lead daily simulation activities, including coordination of supplies, room readiness, and learner orientation on simulation session days.
  • Complete cross-training with simulation technologists in basic manikin setup and operation.



Department Coordination
  • Assist with onboarding and orientation of new faculty, standardized patients, and volunteers specific to simulation education, under the supervision of the Simulation Center Program Manager or Director.
  • Collaborate with the Program Manager and Simulation Director to identify day-to-day operational needs but does not independently oversee or make programming, scheduling, budgetary, or staffing decisions.

Required Qualifications:

Education: Registered Nurse (RN) - Current licensure not required.

Work Experience: 1-year clinical experience in a healthcare setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in nursing

Work Experience:
  • Acute care or ICU experience.
  • Experience in simulation-based education.
  • Proficient in operating simulation equipment and simulation software.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply clinical knowledge and critical thinking in educational settings.
  • Commitment to innovation, continuous learning, and evidence-based simulation practices.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
