PSW II/MEDIUM EQUIPMENT

The City of Independence will accept applications at Kansas Works, 317 N. Penn Avenue, Independence, KS 67301, for a PSW II/Medium Equipment Operator for work at the Street Department or Water/Sewer Department. Basic Function Under supervision, operates and maintains light and medium equipment, including trucks, smaller front-end loaders, roll- ers, motor graders, street sweepers, and related equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Installs, repairs, and locates water and sewer mains and lines Maintains operation of the water and wastewater treatment plants Repair streets, manholes and street signs Picks-up and disposes of trash and brush Reads, maintains, repairs, tests, and replaces water meters Trains in operation of equipment Turns on and off water service Maintains and repairs water pumps and service stations May supervise a small crew of laborers Performs additional duties as assigned

Qualifications Some knowledge of the materials, mechanical devices, tools, and techniques of maintenance and construction Ability to safely operate trucks and medium and heavy equipment Knowledge of methods and tools used to read, repair, and operate water meters Ability to make simple arithmetic calculations Ability to listen to, follow and communicate oral and written instructions Ability to supervise and work well with a small team

Education and Experience Completion of high school or GED required Two years’ experience in construction, operating dump trucks or light equipment, or similar experience required

Special Requirements A current Kansas driver’s license A Class B driver’s license Must be available to work nights, overtime, and weekends

Physical Requirements Intense physical effort is required. Individual must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, carry, push, pull, climb, balance,

stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, handle, grasp, speak, and listen for extended periods of time. Working Conditions

Work involves frequent exposure to unpleasant elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, chemicals, etc.

SALARY RANGE: The starting salary for this position is $15.33 per hour plus benefits. APPLICATION DEADLINE: Until Filled.
