Crew Chief - Public Works

Job Description

Helps supervise and participates in the work of a maintenance crew engaged in a wide variety of construction, maintenance and repair projects involving County infrastructure. Participates in snow and ice removal operations

Trains and works with Equipment Operators and other subordinate workers

  • Operates all assigned equipment with a high degree of proficiency
  • Trains equipment operators on assigned equipment
  • Provides opportunities for operators to develop skills on assigned equipment
  • Operates equipment when necessary for road construction, repair and maintenance.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and makes minor repairs to equipment
  • Performs manual work associated with equipment operations

Assists the Area Foreman in planning, scheduling and assigning work to crew

  • Plans, directs and supervises the work of a small crew
  • Plans and supervises the setup of construction work zones
  • Assists the Area Supervisor in evaluating job performance
  • On-call after hours & weekends for emergency callouts or designates a crew member
  • Wears PPE and enforces local, state and federal safety regulations

Participates in snow and ice removal operations

  • Functions as a shift supervisor for snow and ice removal operations
  • Operates a motor grader for snow and ice removal when necessary
  • Ensures all equipment is in good working condition
  • Ensures all equipment is cleaned, fueled and loaded for follow on shift
  • Communicates problems/concerns immediately to next shift supervisor

Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent. Three years Public Works or road construction experience. Valid Kansas Commercial Driver’s License Class A with tanker endorsement
