Director of Accounting- Controller
The Director of Accounting, Controller ("Controller") is responsible for the overall operations of the Accounting team, including but not limited to traditional corporate accounting functions (month-end close, A/P, Payroll, Fixed Assets) and traditional financial reporting functions that include monthly unconsolidated and consolidated CommunityAmerica financial statements, quarterly CALL report filing, and internal management financial reporting. The Controller leads the daily operational aspects of accounting including balancing the Fed account, daily and monthly account reconciliations, research and resolution of general ledger account differences.
The Controller leads the coordination of the annual external audit and regulatory examination and is ultimately responsible for the accuracy and reliability of the financial results of the organization. This position also serves an integral role in the adoption and ongoing application of ASC 326, Current Expected Credit Losses (CECL). The Controller leads automation efforts of the accounting team and shares best practices with other operational areas of the business. The Controller is responsible for identifying and evaluating processes, procedures, and applications currently in place and implement changes to meet strategic goals. The Controller provides ad hoc support to senior levels of management as requested.
Duties & Responsibilities
Direct daily general ledger, accounting, and financial reporting activities
Ensure the accuracy and completeness of the accounting records to include documentation of all processes and procedures
Accountable for the general ledger interface matrices for all subledger systems
Review and distribution of monthly consolidated financial statements to include actual/actual variance explanations
Review the quarterly CALL report to ensure accuracy and completeness
Lead the annual audit process; prepare highly technical disclosures and supporting schedules (CECL, mortgage servicing rights, loan commitments and other financial derivatives)
Continually review methodologies and processes to improve and enhance results within the accounting department. Lead projects to implement improvement plans.
Partner with the finance team to ensure best practices are utilized to gain efficiencies and improve productivity through the integration of Axiom into daily operational tasks.
Work with other credit union departments to ensure end-to-end workflow and processes are effective and efficient.
Foster and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in all areas of the organization
Provide guidance to credit union leadership on complex accounting pronouncements and issues.
Provides frequent and meaningful feedback to staff regarding performance, completes performance reviews and ensures goals and objectives are established and measured.
Hiring, evaluating, promoting, compensating, and disciplining support staff
Provides an environment for staff that enables them to carry out the strategic goals and activities as defined by the departments as well as the credit union overall
Demonstrate behaviors that are consistent with the credit union's values, philosophies, and leadership characteristics
Promotes honest and open communication throughout the credit union.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting, or equivalent experience
A minimum of seven (7) years of experience as a senior leader in Accounting, preferably within the Financial Services Industry (ideally a credit union or a bank) and as a Controller
Proven experience leading an Accounting team to achieve daily operational initiatives
Detailed understanding of accounting principles (GAAP, FFEIC, FASB)
Proven experience with process automation and execution of initiatives centered on operational efficiencies and excellence
CPA strongly preferred with Big 4 audit experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Minimum five years of supervisory experience, preferably in Accounting
Experience in banking operations
Experience accounting for mortgage, credit card, and externally serviced portfolios of loans
Understanding of the application of asset/liability management, key drivers of the organizations financial statements and results
Significant Excel expertise
