Job Description

Summary of Responsibilities

Employee is responsible for setting own priorities for work methods within recommended guidelines. Work is performed in accordance with generally accepted trade practices and occupational safety precautions. Specific job-related information is available from code books, manuals, blueprints and state specifications. The majority of work involves performing highly skilled carpentry tasks related to the preventive maintenance and remodeling projects performed by a large Physical Plant complex. Performs assignments received through service requests, projects from the Planning Department and special assignments (written or verbal) received from Supervisor of the Carpentry Shop.

Minimum Education
•High school diploma or its equivalent by hire date.

Minimum Experience
•Eight years of experience as a carpenter. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Knowledge, skills and abilities
•Knowledge of the standard practices, materials and tools of the carpentry trade.
•Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
•Ability to read, interpret and work from sketches, blueprints and specifications.
•Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
•Ability to care for the tools and equipment of the trade.
•Ability to use and operate carpenter tools and machines.
•Knowledge of & skill in mechanical trades related to & applicable in an operation such as a large Physical Plant complex.

Required Licenses, Certificates & Registrations
•Valid driver’s license to operate State vehicles on & off campus

Preferred Education

Preferred Experience
•Preferred (10) ten years of experience in the carpentry trade that involved performing tasks related to a large complex such as in Physical Plant operations.
•Although no special training is required an employee should have sufficient experience, vocational education in the skilled trades would be helpful, particularly finish carpentry, cabinet building, framing and masonry work.

For what purpose, with whom and how frequently are contacts made with the public, other employees or officials?
•The majority of contacts are made with Physical Plant personnel for the purpose of exchanging work-related information. Occasionally contacts with supervision or University department heads & administrators are made during maintenance or repair of specialized equipment. The purpose of the contact is to plan, coordinate & advise on work efforts, interpret guidelines or instructions, elicit opinions or give guidance on the basis of facts to resolve common issues or problems when the information is not sensitive in nature or the individuals or groups are working toward mutual goals & have basically cooperative attitudes. Well developed communication skills are required.

Regular Hours of Work
7:45 A.M. – 4:30 P.M. Monday-Friday, other hours as needed to support departmental objectives

Environmental Factors
•In the course of performing the tasks assigned to this position an incumbent is exposed to hazards that could result in serious injury if safety procedures are not followed. The employee is required to work under uncomfortable conditions at times. The work environment involves hazards, risks or discomforts typical of working with or around machinery with exposed moving parts, irritant chemicals, heavy equipment or abusive or hostile clientele. Exposure to disagreeable weather conditions & extreme levels of temperature, ventilations, lighting & sound are normal. Protective clothing or gear & specific safety standards or procedures may be required. Serious injury is possible. Manipulating equipment weighing up to 50lbs.
