Position Overview

The Research Associate in the University of Kansas Mass Spectrometry Laboratory is a research resource/collaborator in the utilization of the techniques and instrumentation of mass spectrometry in the analysis of proteins and protein mixtures. This scientist operates high resolution hybrid mass spectrometers and attendant high performance separation devices. Instruments include an LTQFT, Synapt Qtof with IMS, and Q exactive Orbitrap.In addition to instrumentation, understanding of basic qualitative and quantitative proteomics techniques and utilization of software for quantitation, searching and general data analysis are required. Implementing and optimizing sample preparation strategies for proteomic analysis are required. In addition to conducting experiments this person participates in manuscript writing, report writing, and advising clients on experimental design. Training clients on data analysis lab software and instrumentation is on as needed basis. In addition to scientific duties responsibilities for this position include management of technical staff, instrument maintenance and scheduling, performance quality control, data storage and retrieval, billing for services rendered, supply ordering, interfacing with instrument suppliers, engineers and university support personnel.

Job Description

25% This scientist operates high resolution hybrid mass spectrometers and attendant high performance separation devices.

25% Utilization of software for quantitation, searching and general data analysis.

20% Implementing and optimizing sample preparation strategies for proteomic analysis.

15% Conducting experiments and documentation, including manuscript writing, report writing, and advising clients on experimental design.

5% Training clients on data analysis lab software and instrumentation on a as needed basis.

10% In addition to scientific duties responsibilities this position includes management of technical staff, instrument maintenance and scheduling, performance quality control, data storage and retrieval, billing for services rendered, supply ordering, interfacing with instrument suppliers, engineers and university support personnel.

Required Qualifications

1. Master’s degree and 3 years of additional experience in the field/area of research or Doctorate in the physical sciences
2. Experience in analytical techniques for biochemistry or chemistry.
Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience in Mass Spectrometry especially of peptides and proteins
2. Experience with proteomics software tools especially search engines
3. Experience in sample preparation for protein analysis by mass spectrometry
