JOB TITLE: Housekeeper

DEPARTMENT: Housekeeping

REPORTS TO: Housekeeping Supervisor



The housekeeper is responsible for carrying out all housekeeping activities, resident rooms, and other areas of the home.  Maintains a clean, sanitary, and deodorized facility thus assuring the safety and well-being of all who live in, work at, and visit the facility.



Duties are determined by the facility and may include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Clean resident rooms, offices, and other areas following proper dusting, vacuuming, and mopping procedures
  2. Wash Windows
  3. Clean bathrooms following proper sanitizing procedures
  4. Wash walls
  5. Dust furniture, pictures, and decorative arrangements
  6. Empty trash and waste containers
  7. Restock toilet articles
  8. Scrape edges around mopboard of rooms and bathrooms
  9. Gives special attention to the cleanliness of corridors, utility rooms, and exit areas.
  10. Moves furniture
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Appearance of area:

Carries out varies housekeeping duties with a sense of pride for the facility and love/concern for residents. Effects a thorough “beneath the surface” cleaning and neatness in assigned areas.






Follows proper call in procedure; always on time and/or notifies supervisor if emergency arises; is willing to make schedule adjustments and makes a special effort to work extra when needed.


Immediate Supervisor:

Housekeeping Supervisor. All work is subject to review by immediate supervisor.


Infection Control:

Washes hands often and according to procedures; use clean rags for each task; follows procedures for correct disinfectant and sanitizing mixtures.  Is conscious of infection control in all areas of housekeeping and practices proper isolation/skin-wound precaution procedures when applicable.


Interaction with Residents:

Takes a genuine interest in the residents’ lives. Establishes trusting relationships with them… calls them by name and above all, takes time to listen and assit them in any way possible.


Observation and Reporting of Problems:

Anticipates problems from experience with residents or equipment/supplies; reports problems to supervisor and follows through with their decision. Takes pride in performing tasks of the department, which are necessary for a clean, sanitary, and deodorized facility.


Operation of Equipment:

Thoroughly cleans and properly stores equipment after use. Sanitizes according to procedures; follows manufacturer’s manual for maximum operations and maintenance.


Personal Appearance:

Dresses appropriately for work demands, has high standards for personal grooming and hygiene. Follows designated dress code.


Physical Demands:

Stands and walks most of the day. Turns, stoops, kneels, and reaches while performing routine housekeeping tasks. Lifts and carries cleaning equipment.



Must be able to read, write, and follow oral and written directions.  Must possess an interest in caring for elderly and be able to work well with others.


Record Keeping:

Responds to records kept. Suggests improvement in forms and procedures.


Relating to Public:

Greets family, friends, and visitors with a smile.  Answers questions knowledgeably (or refers correctly) in a friendly and businesslike manner.  Remains open minded and patient with all.


Relating to Supervisors:

Respects the position of supervisor. Responds positively to realistic ideas and suggestions.  Supplies supervisor with facts necessary for sound decision making. Understands that one of the main responsibilities held is to ask questions when in doubt.



Keeps doors closed; cleans up spills promptly; keeps cleaning carts out of the walkways; uses “wet floor” signs and mops one side of the hall at a time.  Uses proper lifting technique to avoid injury; anticipates danger for self and others.  May be appointed to Safety Committee.



Attends training sessions when required or requested. Makes a special effort to make up missed sessions. Seeks out opportunities for special training. May suggest topics for departmental training programs.



Helps others willingly upon request and in spare moments looks for ways to help other staff. Anticipates needs of others. Works with an attitude of teamwork.


Working Conditions:

Works in clean, well-lit, heated and ventilated rooms and hallways.  Possibility of being exposed to residents having communicable disease.
