Highway Construction Technician I

Effective July 1, the pay rate will increase to $16.30 per hour.

Successful applicants for this position will be under immediate supervision and trained to perform standard tests on construction material and inspections in routine phases of construction projects, and/or participate as a member of a highway construction or a preliminary design survey crew.
Applicants may be hired at (or promoted into) the Construction Technician II level at $16.802 ($17.75 after July 1) if they possess an Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology and are being assigned Construction Technician II level duties OR if they have successfully completed the required NDOT courses (Math, Plan Reading, and Bridge Plan Reading), gained the necessary experience, and are being assigned Construction Technician II level duties.

Examples of Work
Testing work includes:
+ Perform or assist with standard tests on Portland cement concrete, asphaltic concrete, soil, aggregate and other construction material for conformance to specifications, and maintain automated records.
+ Perform tests such as slump tests, entrained air content, and unit weight tests of Portland cement concrete.
+ Perform soil tests using light weight deflectometer to measure deflection and moisture.
+ Use balloon volume measures, scales, and heating devices to calculate the density and moisture content of soil.
?Inspection work includes:
+ inspect contractors’ work on construction projects including checking grades and elevations, and collecting recording measurements, and maintaining automated records.
+ Observe transportable and stationary scales to weigh contractors’ trucks containing materials use in highway construction such as concrete, hay for mulch, asphalt and gravel.
+ Inspect earthwork and removal operations.
+ Read construction plans to understand dimensions and information shown and apply the information to the inspection of projects.
?Survey work includes:
+ Participate on a highway construction survey crew responsible to utilize construction plans, blue top data, and cross section data to stake locations at highway construction sites.
+ Measure elevations using a survey rod and level, measure distances using a chain, tape measure or electronic measuring equipment.
+ Make standard computations, operate total station, GPS, and/or level.
+ Act as survey crew leader on less complex surveys or fill in for crew leader.
+ Assist Maintenance forces with Emergency and Winter Operations.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.
PREFERRED: Experience in record keeping, surveying, materials testing, construction inspection, basic computer and the operation of heavy equipment. Possession of a valid Class A or B Commercial driver’s license with tanker endorsement. Material testing certifications such as ACI or traffic control training from ATTSSA.
OTHER: Must possess a valid Class B Commercial driver’s license within 60 days of hire. Regular and reliable attendance. Applicants will be eligible for promotion to the Construction Technician II level ($16.554) if they possess an Associate’s degree in civil engineering Technology or a related field or upon successfully completing the required NDOT courses, gaining the necessary experience and being assigned Construction Technician II level duties.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must have good math skills. Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds, climb, bend, stoop, walk long distances and work long hours in outdoor temperature extremes. Must have strong organizational skills and be able to multitask. Must be able to report to work outside scheduled work hours for snow and other highway emergencies within 40 minutes under normal driving conditions and be placed in an “on-call” status.
