Sr Security Engineer

Job Description:


The Sr. Security Engineer is accountable for delivering innovative security technology solutions for H&R Block. The Sr. Security Engineer will work alongside Security Operations, Security Architecture, Incident Response, Identity Management, and Compliance teams to protect H&R Block from our cyber adversaries.

This position will also perform technical research and testing of new security capabilities associated with Next Generation Firewalls, IPS, Enterprise Mobility Management, Endpoint protection, cloud security, and Azure Information Protection suite to name a few. The Sr. Security Engineer will document test results and give recommendations to management on how best to design, build, test and implement security solutions that support our IT and business partners.

The Sr. Security Engineer will apply working knowledge of information security tactics, techniques, and procedures paired with an in-depth understanding of security controls to give ongoing security support to IT organizations, and, to articulate the security impact of proposed modifications, additions, and evolutions of technology. The Sr. Security Engineer will also help in the evaluation of company projects and initiatives for any security risks; the Sr. Security Engineer will develop workable solutions that mitigate or reduce the risks while, at the same time, ensuring the profitability of H&R Block.


+ Represent Information Security Engineering in the planning, engineering, and deployment of IT technologies.

+ Proactively research and find automation/innovation opportunities that will improve security operations workflow, the efficacy of security platforms, ease of administration and the overall security posture of H&R Block.

+ Function as the Tier 3 escalation point to troubleshoot and resolve system, software or hardware deficiencies in existing security systems.

+ Give prompt and consistent updates of assigned projects and security-related issues.

+ Implement information security best practices in H&R Block.

+ Develop security configuration standards and procedures.

+ Participate in efforts to improve threat detection and monitoring systems. Assist the Incident Response team in configuration reviews to assure these systems quickly and accurately detect and mitigate incidents/problems.

+ Optimize the performance of security platforms by fine-tuning configurations according to vendor specifications.

+ Assist Security Architecture in defining security requirements & Implementing security solutions.

+ Adhere to H&R Block corporate standards, policies and procedures.


+ Bachelor’s degree, Associate Degree or equivalent training from two-year College or technical school in Information Technology, Information Security/Assurance, Engineering or related field of study.

+ 3 or more years of direct work experience in information security or network organizations.

+ 2 or more years of advanced work experience with one or more of the following security technologies: Next Generation Firewall, Enterprise Mobility Management, Intrusion Protection/Prevention, Threat Intelligence, Multi-Factor, Role Based Access Control Forensics, Security Logging, and Monitoring, PKI, Vulnerability Management, Web Application Firewall, and URL Filtering.

+ Preferred candidates will have one or more certifications in Security/Networking including Security+, GSEC, GCIA, GCIH, CISSP or another security-specific vendor/product certifications.

+ Proficient with TCP/IP and other networking protocols.

+ Experience with Linux, Windows and Network Operating Systems needed.

+ Proven critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

+ Strong organization skills needed.

+ Willing to work after hours and weekends on a rotating basis.

+ Willing to work occasional off-shift hours to cover customer maintenance and on-site activities.
